EXAMPLE Checked 2026-10-13

Federal debt

“The U.S. national debt has passed $40 trillion.”

Bottom line

Accurate as stated. The Treasury’s own daily figure for total public debt outstanding was about $40.31 trillion on Oct. 8, 2026. About $32.45 trillion of that is debt held by the public; the rest is owed to other government accounts. People often mix up these two numbers.

Left view

Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) · left-leaning

Frames rising debt mainly as a revenue problem caused by tax cuts.

“Tax cuts enacted over the last 25 years — the Bush tax cuts, their extensions under the Obama Administration, and the 2017 Trump tax cuts — have weakened revenues, driving up deficits.”

Costly Tax Cuts Increase Our Nation’s Fiscal Challenges (Senate Budget Committee testimony, March 10, 2026)

Right view

American Enterprise Institute (AEI) · right-leaning

Frames rising debt mainly as a spending problem driven by entitlements and interest.

“The bottom line is that the federal government’s fiscal position continues to deteriorate, with rapid spending increases on the main entitlements and net interest on past borrowing accounting for most of the growing fiscal pressure.”
